Introduction
Welcome to Sociology of Education at SUSTech. This course explores the complex intersection between social systems and educational institutions. Rather than focusing on rote memorization, we follow Einstein’s philosophy: the value of a university education lies in training the mind to think critically about the structures that shape our lives. We will examine how schools function as "organs" of the social body and whether they truly provide a path for social mobility.
1. Core Learning Goals
- Mastering fundamental sociological concepts to analyze the educational sphere.
- Understanding how education forms social order and maintains stratification.
- Critically evaluating concepts like fairness, social mobility, and cultural capital.
- Applying ethical frameworks (Utilitarianism and Deontology) to real-world issues such as the Gaokao and school tracking.

2. Evaluation & Grading
Success in this module requires active engagement. The grading is divided into four components: Attendance (20%), ensuring consistency; Class Participation (20%), requiring each student to speak up at least twice; an Interview Project (20%), focusing on qualitative research; and a Group Presentation (40%), where pairs analyze a core text.
